Great Web Site! I'm searching for info on my Great Grandfather William Lawton born there ~ 1834. His daughter Jane was born there ~ 1860. Williams wife was Elizabeth. They were in Openshaw in 1881. The Jane Lawton listed as a grocer in your 1895 register may have been an sister of William's.
Thanks from Jupiter, Florida USA,
Jim ;>)

Thank you, I have just found my great great grandmother (aged 11) on your 1881 census and the rest of her family in Earlestown. Nice to know my Earlestown roots go back to 1870. My family old & young are thrilled.

The local history items are brilliant and the forum is hilarious, I love the ghost stories and having a moan on EEE Bah Gum!

Pity the whats on isnt taking off, more people need to contribute to this perhaps via the message forum. ;-)

Love the site...well done...!! I lived in Stephenson Rd and went to the Newton Park School until we migrated to Western Australia in 1966. I've been back a couple of times and still like to keep tabs on what's happening over there... 8-)

Excellent website. I haven't been back to Newton since the early 1980s, now living abroad so it's great to read about my hometown. I didn't realise it was so interesting! I haven't seen anything on Newton Grammar School - must keep looking. If I lived nearer I would volunteer to help you Steven. All the best, Pam Hillier, nee Newton (now in Cyprus)

This is a brilliant site .I used to spend a lot of time in Earlstown and Newton .Can anyone remember the brick works ? And I am also interested to hear that the Viaduct pub in Earle St is boarded up .Many years ago I used to help out at weekends at the newspaper shop in Earle St and I used to enjoy a pint in the Viaduct .
Please keep adding to the site .It's great .

If you email me, I would be happy to produce a website for you to your requirements for free, you / he, would need to cover the hosting and domain name costs, but I am able to write you a custom coded website or setup a pre made system like this one for you.

I can either code you a custom site, or use one of the many system I help to code through the GPL community.

Really great site which I will pass on to my friends and colleagues :-D

Liked the historic info very informative.

Do any of your members know of any local organisations that could help a disabled chap try and set up a heart disease self help/support web site locally in St Helens?

Anyway keep up the good work and I'll keep spreading the publicity. ;-)

Cheers,

I'm interested in N-le-W because it was a rotten borough. I'd be grateful for any speciffic information on this subject.

Also - what is the specific grid-point where the Huskinson accident occured?

Hi Trevor Hazleton. I may be related to you. Last time I was in England I lived on Billington Avenue, around the corner from my mum's second cousins I believe. I know we are related to Enid Hazleton, and her sister, I can't think of her name at the moment. I remember two brothers that lived near Billington avenue with their mum and dad, on the main road there, I can't remember the name of the road now. Post back if you know me. thanks, my mum's maiden name is Broughton. :-) My name is Carol

It was good to read about the Vulcan foundry. My Great Great Grandfather was a Draughtsman there around 1901. His brother in-law was a fitter on the engines in that same year. Their names were John William Johnson and William Wright. Anyone with information on this family, please don't hesitate to write me an e-mail. :-D :-? :-o :-D 8-)

I have enjoyed visiting the website and actually discovered a few items about the Bottle Works in Newton.
My Great Gt Grandfather was John Little referred to in your history piece.
From your census material I have found that he was living at Windy Bank House in 1871 which I did not realise. Many Thanks. Will visit again. :-)

Thanks for a great web site, have enjoyed reading through it. My late grandfather was Gerald Collingwood and was, I'm sure many will remember him, Managing Directior of Vulcan Foundary. He didn't really tell us many stories of Vulcan, but my late mother, Annette did.My brother and I fell in love with the place as children and loved hearing stories about Vulcan and my grandfather. My late grandmother, Joan Collingwood had something to do with the founding of the Boys Club in NLW I belive? Thanks for the web site!

Hi,
I have lived in Newton for most of my life. What a great website.
My grandfather Thomas Stokes worked at the Vulcan Foundry for 44years as a crane driver, he worked on the first deisel engine. If he were alive now he could have told you some tales.
I remember West's shop Pam, I knew your grandmother and grandfather, lovely people.
Keep up the good work. :-)

Fascinating, I congratulate you Steve, you have made my day. What a great job you have done setting up this website. I was born and raised in N-le-W and lived in Acorn St. I moved to New Zealand in 1972 and would love to catch up with some of my old mates. I completed an apprenticeship at the Vulcan in 1960 and all my family still live in N-le-W.
