Great Web Site! I'm searching for info on my Great Grandfather William Lawton born there ~ 1834. His daughter Jane was born there ~ 1860. Williams wife was Elizabeth. They were in Openshaw in 1881. The Jane Lawton listed as a grocer in your 1895 register may have been an sister of William's.

Thank you, I have just found my great great grandmother (aged 11) on your 1881 census and the rest of her family in Earlestown. Nice to know my Earlestown roots go back to 1870. My family old & young are thrilled.
The local history items are brilliant and the forum is hilarious, I love the ghost stories and having a moan on EEE Bah Gum!
Pity the whats on isnt taking off, more people need to contribute to this perhaps via the message forum. ;-) |

Excellent website. I haven't been back to Newton since the early 1980s, now living abroad so it's great to read about my hometown. I didn't realise it was so interesting! This is a brilliant site .I used to spend a lot of time in Earlstown and Newton .Can anyone remember the brick works ? And I am also interested to hear that the Viaduct pub in Earle St is boarded up .Many years ago I used to help out at weekends at the newspaper shop in Earle St and I used to enjoy a pint in the Viaduct .

It was good to read about the Vulcan foundry. My Great Great Grandfather was a Draughtsman there around 1901. His brother in-law was a fitter on the engines in that same year. I have enjoyed visiting the website and actually discovered a few items about the Bottle Works in Newton.
My Great Gt Grandfather was John Little referred to in your history piece.
From your census material I have found that he was living at Windy Bank House in 1871 which I did not realise. Many Thanks. Will visit again. :-) |

Thanks for a great web site, have enjoyed reading through it. My late grandfather was Gerald Collingwood and was, I'm sure many will remember him, Managing Directior of Vulcan Foundary. He didn't really tell us many stories of Vulcan, but my late mother, Annette did.My brother and I fell in love with the place as children and loved hearing stories about Vulcan and my grandfather. My late grandmother, Joan Collingwood had something to do with the founding of the Boys Club in NLW I belive? Thanks for the web site! |

Hi,
I have lived in Newton for most of my life. What a great website.
My grandfather Thomas Stokes worked at the Vulcan Foundry for 44years as a crane driver, he worked on the first deisel engine. If he were alive now he could have told you some tales.
I remember West's shop Pam, I knew your grandmother and grandfather, lovely people.
